Silicon-hydrogel contact lenses offer very high oxygen permeability that provides sufficient oxygen supply for the cornea which is one of the few tissues of a human body that can absorb oxygen even when you fall asleep with your lenses still on.
This is why the silicon-hydrogel contacts are most commonly used for both extended wear (up to 6 nights non-stop) and continuous wear (up to 30 nights without taking them out).
Do silicon-hydrogel contact lenses have any cons?
Especially older versions of these contacts have a so-called higher modulus of elasticity which means they are harder and thus less comfortable to wear for some. The latest silicon-hydrogel lenses of the 2nd and 3rd generation have an even ratio of silicon and hydrogel (which means stiffness doesn’t occur).
