Are you fogged up? 5 tips on how to stop glasses steaming up when wearing a mask
Although face masks help contain the infection to some extent, they also bring problems. One of them? Fogged-up eyeglass lenses.
The annoying phenomenon doesn't only occur in connection with face masks, of course. People who wear glasses know very well that the change from cold to warm, drinking hot drinks, boiling water or opening the dishwasher, jogging and other sports can lead to fogging of the glass lenses.
We have therefore asked our customers and optometrists to give us 4 tips on how to prevent glasses from fogging while wearing a face mask.
1st tip: Wear a face mask that fits well
First of all it is important to wear a well-fitting mask. This is because a well-fitting mask allows less unnecessary air to reach your spectacle lenses.
It should particularly sit well on the nose, so that it fits your whole face. Our opticians especially recommend a mask that is reinforced with a wire that forms the fabric around the nose. If you sew your mask yourself, you can use a piece of copper or binding wire.
Be aware, however, that small airborne particles and droplets are not stopped by homemade masks and therefore do not provide good protection against infection. Only when all high-quality masks are sold out you should sew a mask yourself as a last resort.
2nd tip: Use anti-fog spray or gel
Another method to prevent steaming glasses is to use an anti-fog spray or anti-fog gel. This is simply sprayed or applied to the glass lens, then removed with a soft cotton cloth and voilà, your lenses will no longer fog up the next time you go shopping or walking.
By the way, do you know how to properly clean your glasses?
Cleaning glasses – Don'ts
- DON'T use your shirttail or other cloth to clean your glasses, especially when the lenses are dry. This can scratch your glass lenses.
- DON'T use saliva to wet your eyeglass lenses.
- DON'T use household glass or surface cleaners to clean your eyeglasses. These products have ingredients that can damage eyeglass lenses and coatings, such as anti-reflective coating.
- DON'T use paper towels, napkins, tissues or toilet paper to clean your eyeglass lenses. These can scratch or smear your lenses or leave them full of lint.
- DON'T try to „buff away“ a scratch in your lenses. This only makes the situation worse.
3rd tip: Apply surface treatment
One of the most effective ways to keep your lenses permanently clear and free from fogging is to apply a special surface treatment to the spectacle lenses.
For optimal functionality, we recommend the microfibre cloth sold with your glasses. If you need to buy a new one check the microfibre cloths at Lentiamo. The cloth in combination with glass lenses provides excellent anti-fog effect when applying it everyday to your eyeglass lenses. After three months, it is recommended to replace your old fabric with a new one.
4th tip: Use soap or shaving foam
Yes, even these two simple household remedies can provide short-term relief!
Simply take a mild liquid soap, apply a small amount in the shape of a cross to your spectacle lenses and spread it over the front and back of the lenses with a microfibre or flannel cloth. This creates a layer that does not fog up the glasses.
But the ultimate life hack is called shaving foam. First rub your lenses with shaving foam on both sides. Then carefully rinse the shaving foam with warm water. This procedure is a simple way to prevent fogging of the lenses, even during sports activities and other extreme situations. Even when you wear a face mask!
A final professional tip: You can also use this trick to finally clean your bathroom mirror again ;)
5th tip: Wear contact lenses!
A simple remedy is to wear contact lenses. Even in times of coronavirus, these are a very safe and clean alternative to glasses.
Scientists could not find any evidence that wearing contact lenses poses a risk to people wearing them. Since they are manufactured under the strictest safety measures and packed in sterile blisters, contact lenses are safe, even during the pandemic. Just make sure you never touch your eyes or lenses with unwashed hands!
