PMMA

Polymethylmethacrylate – PMMA – is the oldest material that was used to produce hard contact lenses.

This is the first use of plastic material in contactology.

PMMA is impermeable to gases, with sufficient hardness, scratch and break resistant, freestone, biologically inert and harmless to diluted acids, solvents, etc.. Its nonpolar surface minimizes the formation of deposits. Its disadvantage is that the contact lenses made from this material are thin.
