Vasodilatation of the conjunctiva

This is an expansion of the blood vessels caused by mechanical stimulation (trauma) of the contact lenses to the conjunctiva.

Mechanical trauma of the conjunctiva leads to mast cell degranulation and release of histamine, which causes vasodilatation and hyperemia of conjunctiva – see conjunctival hyperaemia.
