Refractive index

The index of refraction is a fundamental optical quantity characterizing any optical environment. For the material of contact lenses the figure of refractive index should be close to the value of the refractive index of tears, respectively of the cornea. The lowest possible refraction rating would reduce the subsequent divergence of rays entering the eye. Depending on the type of material, it ranges from 1.3 to 1.6.
