Expiry date of contact lenses

The expiry date is indicated on the packaging of the contact lenses in which you can still open the blister and wear the contact lenses throughout the designated period of time

Do contact lenses have an expiry date?

Yes, as with any other product we buy, contact lenses also have an expiry date.

Where can I see the lenses' expiration?

This information is printed on the blister that holds the contact lenses, but you can also find the expiry date on the box.

Definition of “blister”
Blister pack is a term for several types of pre-formed plastic packaging used for small consumer goods, foods, and for pharmaceuticals. The primary component of a blister pack is a cavity or pocket made from a formable web, usually a thermoformed plastic. This usually has a backing of paperboard or a lidding seal of aluminium foil or plastic. A blister that folds onto itself is often called a clamshell.

The expiry date is usually written in two ways:

  • Using the abbreviation EXP
  • Using the hourglass sign, e.g. ⌛ 2026/01

How long can you use an open package of contact lenses?

Once you open the blister pack you should use the contact lens within the time specified by the manufacturer.

Usage of contact lenses based on their specifications:

  • Daily contact lenses: Once open, wear the lenses and upon removal throw them away.
  • Bi-weekly contact lenses: Once open, they can be used for two weeks ( 14 days ). Bi-weekly lenses, also known as 2-week disposable contact lenses, should be stored in a lens solution when not used.
  • Monthly contact lenses: Once open, they can be used for one month. Monthly lenses should be stored in a lens solution when not used."
