Adhesion of contact lenses
Perfect adhesion (adherence) to the cornea is necessary not only to maintain the contact lens in the eye, but to ensure hydration of the areа of the cornea, which is covered by the contact lenses. This moisturizing function is also used as a treatment, e.g. for a deep corneal injury.
Incomplete adhesion occurs as a result of lacrimation, or uneven surface of the cornea, which does not allow the creation of negative pressure required to keep soft contact lenses in place.
In the event that air bubbles remain under the applied contact lens (due to drying), it causes a corneal dystrophy, which may manifest by irreversible changes of the cornea.
