Acute red eye syndrome
This syndrome occurs sometimes, after waking up, to patients who use contact lenses of continuous wear.
It manifests itself as a discomfort, tearing orphotophobia.
It is caused by a combination of hypoxia and hypercapnia, consequent acidosis, toxic or inflammatory reaction caused by large foreign bodies behind the lens, as well as mechanical stimulation (trauma), hypersensitivity or toxic reactions to preservatives.
